He develops mathematical theories and algorithms to solve inverse problems arising from signal processing, wireless communication and image processing. A total of three prizes is awarded this year by the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM). Shuyang's prize is for his paper "Self-calibration and biconvex compressive sensing", coauthored with his advisor, Prof. Thomas Strohmer.

The Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM) has just announced the 2017 Class of SIAM Fellows, among them Prof. Zhaojun Bai, Professor of Computer Science and Mathematics, who is recognized for significant contributions to numerical linear algebra, eigenvalue computation in particular, and its application to computational science and engineering.

The American Physical Society (APS) has elected Raissa D’Souza to its Class of 2016 Fellows “for seminal contributions to the statistical physics of complex systems, including self-organization in jamming phenomena and cascades, abrupt percolation transitions, and interdependence in network systems.”

His paper "Hierarchical graph Laplacian eigen transforms", coauthored with 2016 Applied Math Ph.D. graduate Jeff Irion received the 2016 JSIAM Letters Best Paper Award; and he received the 2016 Bulletin of JSIAM Best Author Award for his 2015 paper "Applied harmonic analysis on graphs and networks".

The Noether Senior Scholar Award is presented by the American Statistical Association (ASA) to a distinguished senior researcher or teacher in nonparametric statistics. Prof. Jane-Ling Wang was recognized for her outstanding contributions to the theory, applications and teaching of nonparametric statistics.
