Alex Wein joined the UC Davis Department of Mathematics as an Assistant Professor in 2022. His research is focused on mathematical foundations of data science, seeking to understand the fundamental tradeoffs between statistical efficiency and computational efficiency for a variety of data analysis tasks, ranging from community detection in networks to determination of 3-dimensional molecular structure. Before joining UC Davis he held postdoctoral positions at NYU, UC Berkeley, and Georgia Tech. Prior to that, he earned his doctorate in mathematics at MIT in 2018.
